Which Marmaray station for Dragos? Cevizli, Atalar and the M4

There is no stop called Dragos. Which Marmaray station serves which side of the hill, where the M4 fits in, and how to judge the walk from a flat.

There is no Marmaray stop called Dragos, which is why “which Marmaray station for Dragos?” is such a common search. The short answer is Cevizli or Atalar, depending on where on the hill you are going. The longer answer explains why two flats a few hundred metres apart can have very different commutes.

The Marmaray stations for Dragos, west to east

Marmaray is the suburban railway that runs along the Asian shore and under the Bosphorus to the European side. Heading east from Maltepe, its stops are Cevizli, Atalar, Başak and then Kartal. Dragos sits around the first two.

  • Cevizli serves the western side of Dragos and the big projects near the E-5. Marmara University says its Dragos campus is within walking distance of this stop, and La Mer Dragos is marketed as being close to it as well.
  • Atalar is the next stop east, on the Kartal side. It is the one Istanbul Medeniyet University points visitors to for its Cevizli campus.
  • Başak, in Kartal’s Kordonboyu neighbourhood, comes after that, before Kartal station itself.

The whole line from Gebze to Halkalı opened in March 2019, so from either Dragos stop you can ride straight through to Üsküdar, Sirkeci or Yenikapı without changing.

Why your Marmaray station for Dragos depends on the slope

The rail line runs along the lower ground. Dragos hill climbs 107 metres above it. A flat in the towers by Cevizli might be a level five-minute walk from the platform; a house near the top of Orhantepe may be close on a map but a steep climb home with shopping. When you compare listings, look at the walk, not the straight-line distance.

Questions to ask about any Dragos flat and its station

  • Which stop would you actually use from the front door, and how long is the walk each way?
  • Is the route lit and paved, or does it involve stairs and steep lanes?
  • Is there a bus or shuttle up the hill for days you do not want to walk?

The other line: M4 along the E-5

Above Dragos, the E-5 (D-100) highway runs east to west, and the M4 metro follows it. Hastane–Adliye is the M4 stop by the courthouse; Marmara University directs people coming by metro to its Dragos campus through it. Westward the M4 goes to Kadıköy. Eastward it continues through Kartal and Pendik, and since 2022 it reaches Sabiha Gökçen Airport, which is useful if you fly often.

A practical rule of thumb: Marmaray for the European side and the historic peninsula, M4 for Kadıköy and the airport, and the car for weekends.

Choosing the Marmaray station for Dragos that suits you

  1. Working across the Bosphorus? Put Cevizli or Atalar within an easy walk at the top of your list.
  2. Studying or working at the campuses or the courthouse? The lower slope near the D-100 keeps both lines close.
  3. Want the view more than the commute? The upper hill has it, but budget for a car or the bus.
